Day 4: Shigatse to Gyantse (12,959ft): A two-hour jaunt and we are in the pretty farming village of Gyantse dominated by the old fort captured by Younghusband's raid into Tibet in 1904. The main attraction here is the 1418 Palcha Monastery with it's many prayer wheels and hunkering, prostrating pilgrims. The extraordinary multi-door stupa, 112ft high with 108 separate cells, contains murals, some wonderful statues of Buddha and fierce, giant, toothy-mouthed, google-eyed protector gods.
